How does the CO2 laser work?
The Fraxel laser (German: fractional laser) irradiates the skin with a very fine and precise laser beam, whose divided light pulses penetrate into the epidermis (outer skin layer) and the dermis (middle skin layer). The Fraxel laser operates at two different wavelengths, enabling it to penetrate deeper layers of the skin while remaining very gentle on the skin.
The laser treatment causes tiny injuries in the respective skin layers. These micro-wounds stimulate the skin to regenerate and produce collagen and elastin. Blood circulation is improved and more elastic fibres are formed. In addition, old or damaged skin cells are removed, the skin becomes firmer and looks generally rejuvenated.
CO2 laser – Treatment procedure
After a consultation, during which we discuss which areas of skin are to be treated, the actual therapy with the CO2 laser takes place.
Your skin is first rubbed with a local anaesthetic in the form of an ointment.
After a waiting period of about 10-15 minutes, the affected areas of skin are treated point by point with the laser handpiece. The treatment takes about 15 to 45 minutes.
CO2 laser – Aftercare
After Fraxel laser treatment, your skin may be slightly reddened or swollen, but this should subside after a few days. The skin usually peels after treatment; this is part of the normal regeneration process. In the period following treatment, it is important to avoid sun exposure and use UV protection. Cooling and nourishing creams can accelerate the healing process. Your skin needs about 4-6 weeks to regenerate before further treatment is possible.
