Hyperhidrosis Cologne: effective Treatment for excessive Sweating
Sweating is a natural process of the body as a vital reaction to temperature differences. This reaction helps to compensate for temperature changes – the body is thus protected from overheating. In the case of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), sweating goes beyond the natural process: hyperhidrosis refers to pathologically increased sweat production – the people affected sweat more. The extreme sweat production can be noticeable all over the body or in individual areas of the body. The affected areas are usually the armpits, feet, face or hands.
The social aspect is often particularly stressful for people with hyperhidrosis: some are afraid of being noticed due to an unpleasant body odor or particularly moist areas of the body and the appearance of sweat. Those affected therefore often withdraw.
The causes are not yet fully understood. In rare cases, increased or enlarged sweat glands can be a cause or an illness and medication. In many cases, however, there are no identifiable causes: a disorder of the autonomic nervous system is suspected here, which leads to dysregulation of the sympathetic nervous system. A genetic predisposition apparently also plays an important role.

Hyperhidrosis – our Treatment Methods
Hyperhidrosis can be treated conservatively or surgically. Conservative treatment options include the local application of aluminum chloride, tap water iontophoresis or Botox injections. Surgery is also an option. Here, the sweat glands are surgically removed, which is very effective and permanent.
There are also medicinal approaches (e.g. anticholinergics), which may be an option depending on the initial situation. You can discuss which treatment is best for you with your doctor. At our clinic, we focus on the following procedures:
- Botulinum toxin injection: A very reliable and safe non-invasive treatment option for hyperhidrosis is the injection of Botox. The botulinum toxin is injected into the skin directly at the sweat glands to be treated. This requires a local anaesthetic, as the injections can be painful. The Botox prevents the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (which is responsible for sweat production) from being released from the nerve endings. The sweat gland therefore lacks the signal to release it and sweat production is slowed down or inactive in certain areas. These nerve endings atrophy. The method is very effective and at the same time has few side effects: the effect occurs within a week of injection and can continue for 6-9 months. The treatment can then be repeated. If you have used Botox several times, there may also be a certain lasting effect.
- Removal of sweat glands (suction curettage): Suction curettage is a procedure used to remove the sweat glands in cases of hyperhidrosis. This form of treatment involves a superficial loosening of the fatty tissue and liposuction in the armpit area. This ensures that a large proportion of the sweat glands are also suctioned out, which significantly reduces sweat production. Sweat gland removal is a minimally invasive procedure performed on an outpatient basis under local tumescent anesthesia. Having the sweat glands removed is a safe and permanent method of treating excessive sweating, as the removed sweat glands cannot grow back.
