Otoplasty Cologne: Professional ear correction
Ears primarily have an important function for us: they allow us to hear all the exciting, beautiful and enriching things in life. They are one of our sensory organs and many people hardly think about their ears as long as their hearing is not impaired.
A certain degree of asymmetry in the ears is the rule, but people whose asymmetry is particularly noticeable or whose ears are unusually large often wish to have their ears pinned back. Some may even have had the experience of being teased in the past. Children in particular often experience teasing, which prompts parents to have their child’s ears corrected at an early age so that the child’s self-esteem does not suffer as much.
When it comes to optical ear correction, the term “sail ears” is used colloquially. In medicine, ears that protrude from the head at an angle of more than 30 degrees and whose auricle edge is more than 20 millimetres away from the head are called “sail ears”. Around five percent of the population have prominent ears, but this is not a disease. Protruding ears are simply an anatomical variation and are completely harmless: the cause of protruding ears is a malformation of the ear cartilage that is present from birth. Over time, this deformity can become more pronounced.

Ear Pinning with Otoplasty
There are currently three common methods of correcting ears, especially the sail ears. We offer you the method that makes the most sense for us: Classic surgery (otoplasty). This involves removing parts of the skin at the back of the ear and, depending on the severity, parts of the ear cartilage.
In the following, we will go into more detail about the surgery so that you can get an idea of whether this operation is right for you.
Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) – Treatment Procedure
In preparation for this operation, as with any surgical procedure, blood-thinning medication such as aspirin should be avoided for a week before the operation. The procedure takes about 1-2 hours under local anesthesia. If the patient wishes, it is also possible to perform the operation in twilight sleep. General anesthesia is often used for small children.
In classic auricle augmentation surgery, the ear cartilage is exposed through an invisible incision behind the ear. This allows the tissue to be sculpted and prepared. Additional ear cartilage rarely has to be removed. Once the desired shape has been achieved, the ear is fixed in place with sutures that bend the cartilage and hold the ear in its new position.
Patients can return home on the day of surgery after a short period of rest. A head bandage covering the ears should then be worn for around 2 weeks. This provides optimum support for the ears during wound healing. The stitches can be removed after 10 days at the latest. Slight swelling may occur after the procedure, but this will subside quickly. If you experience sensory disturbances and increased sensitivity to touch, this is not a cause for concern. These will disappear after a few weeks.

Frequently asked Questions about Ear Surgery in Cologne
You probably have many questions about ear correction in Cologne. To make your decision easier, we will answer the most common ones below. However, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. You are welcome to arrange a non-binding consultation at the PALMKLINIK.
Is there pain after ear pinning?
Depending on the method, only a feeling of pressure or a slight pulling sensation is felt during the procedure thanks to local anesthesia. However, pain may occur after the operation. This is treated with painkillers. Pain can also be partially avoided by sleeping on your back to avoid additional pressure or unnecessary friction on the ears.
What does an otoplasty cost?
It is very difficult to make a binding statement here, as the cost of ear pinning depends very much on the individual case. The costs vary depending on the extent of the protruding ears and the desired result. As a rule, however, you can expect costs of between €2,500 and €4,500.
What results can I expect after an ear surgery?
After ear correction, it takes about 2-3 months before you can assess the final result. You should then notice a significant improvement. The ears will then have a natural symmetry that matches the rest of the face. The ears no longer protrude conspicuously and lie harmoniously against the head without appearing unnatural.
Does health insurance cover otoplasty?
For children up to the age of 14, the health insurance company may cover the costs in full or in part. The prerequisite for this is a demonstrable psychological impairment due to the protruding ears. Please contact your health insurance company for more information.
